Symbolic Jewelry

Throughout history, symbols have represented vital aspects of our lives. They represent what we love and what we have experienced, what we hope for and what we have accomplished, what we value and what we believe. If you look back through history, the origin of jewelry began with symbolism. Ancient Egyptians wore amulets, talismans, and ankhs. Ancient Mediterranean and Iranian cultures wore seals and amulets adorned with spiritual symbols, flowers, and stars.  The ancient Greeks wore gemstones adorned with gold jewelry to represent the prosperity of their culture.

Today, symbolic jewelry is still offered in an array of iconic shapes. The David Connolly and Jabel collections include stars, infinity symbols, two stone designs, flowers, triquetras, animal paws, sand dollars, starfishes, and many more symbolic shapes available in 14KT yellow, white, and rose gold. Our symbolic jewelry is adorned with brilliant diamonds, lustrous pearls, and richly colored gemstones.

Heart shaped jewelry, compass jewelry, and cross jewelry are some of the most popular motifs available in the David Connolly symbolic jewelry collection. As with David’s other jewelry designs, these pendants, earrings, and rings are offered in 14KT yellow, white, and rose gold.  We adorn each piece with beautiful brilliant diamonds, lustrous pearls, and richly colored gemstones.

Heart Shaped Jewelry

At first glance, heart shaped jewelry is traditionally used to symbolize romance, but a closer examination of the symbolism associated with the heart unlocks the true depth of meaning behind this touching symbol. Throughout history, the heart has been the root of the emotional and spiritual fabric of one’s existence. For centuries, it has been closely related to the essence of life, making a heart the perfect motif for symbolic jewelry.

First, let us look at the romantic symbolism of the heart and how it has impacted jewelry. The phrase “Vena Amoris” translates from Latin to “vein of the heart.” It is believed that the ring finger was chosen because of the Vena Amoris, which is a secret vein that runs directly to the heart. Therefore, the heart is so profound that it influences the finger on which a wedding band is placed. This romantic meaning is why heart shaped jewelry is often associated with love.

If we look closer, however, heart shaped jewelry is also the perfect self purchase. When worn to represent our hopes, dreams, passions, and motivations, it becomes a symbol for the fabric of one’s life. No one knows us better than ourselves; it is through this spirit that we gift ourselves with symbolic jewelry.

One of David Connolly’s longest and most beloved heart shaped jewelry pieces is a classic gemstone heart pendant. This pendant allows us to blend the symbolism of birthstone jewelry with the signature motifs of symbolic jewelry. Our series features both pendants and earrings in 14KT yellow, white, and rose gold, available with or without a diamond accent.

Our padlock heart set is a romantic twist on classic heart shaped jewelry. This symbolic jewelry set is reminiscent of the famous Love Locks Bridge in Paris, France, also known as the Pont des Arts. The legend of the bridge tells the story of a woman who lost her love during World War I. She latched a lock to the bridge in hopes they would meet again, attesting to the unbreakable bond and commitment of their love. We offer this romantic collection as a matching earring and pendant set to symbolize love’s enduring bond.

Compass Jewelry

The compass has become another iconic motif in our symbolic jewelry collection at David Connolly. The compass is not only a maritime symbol—it has recently become a symbol for the journey of life. A compass guides us on our journeys and, in turbulent times, helps us find our way home. East is our past, west is our future, south is our present, and north is our potential. Navigating life is learning how to balance our past with our future and our present with our potential. David offers symbolic compass pendants and earrings to remind us of life's path and our ever-changing journey.

Gifting compass jewelry is the perfect way to celebrate important milestones in life, like graduations, career changes, the birth of a child, or a major relocation. The compass is even the perfect symbol for moving on from challenging moments in life, such as addiction or divorce. For anyone who finds themself experiencing the journey of life, compass jewelry is the perfect addition to your jewelry collection.

Cross Jewelry

No symbolic jewelry collection would be complete without cross shaped jewelry. The cross is one of the most popular symbolic jewelry designs in the David Connolly collection. This iconic Christian symbol was first introduced in the 3rd century by Emperor Constantine. While it had previously been a pagan symbol, Constantine adapted its use to represent the Christian faith.

Today, one of the most popular cross designs is the iconic t-shape with the center line extending past the cross bar. Generally speaking, the cross is a physical representation of the crucifix on which Jesus Christ was hung. However, throughout the history and evolution of Western Christianianity, the meaning of the cross has evolved. Originating from the split of the Catholic church and the Orthodox church in 1054, the symbolic shape now represents the Passion of Christ.

Today, cross jewelry is dominated by variations of that early symbol from Western Christianianity. The David Connolly collection features Celtic cross jewelry in two distinct styles. The first style in his Celtic cross pendant collection features a cross with a nimbus ring encircling the center of the cross. The other Celtic cross pendant has triquetra knots adorning each of the four arms of the cross. The triquetra is another symbolic jewelry motif significant to both pagan and Christian faiths. The three pointed design represents mother, maiden, and crone to pagan faiths and father, son, and holy ghost to Christians faiths.

Lastly, our Jabel collection features die struck gold crosses adorned in pink and green roses and leaves. The frequent mention of flowers throughout the pages of the Bible make these motifs excellent additions to Christian symbolic jewelry.

Non-traditional cross jewelry is also represented in the David Connolly collection. Our collection features motifs, like the infinity symbol, to speak to people’s deep spiritual beliefs. Likewise, our collection also features an Ankh pendant, which is a cross-like design significant to the Ancient Egyptians.

The David Connolly and Jabel collections offer an array of symbolic jewelry designs that are perfect for gifting to others or yourself. Whatever you are celebrating, we have something perfect for you. Choose from our heart shaped jewelry, which reminds us of the passion that fills our life, our compass jewelry, which reminds us of the journey of our life, or our religious cross jewelry, which speaks to our faith and beliefs.
